Amber & Jewellery

The Beginning
The oldest cut and polished amber plates were found within the area of Wysoczyzna Leszczynska. They can be dated back to paleolithic era (40000 – 10000 BC) namely the end of ice age. Amber was used by humankind from the very beginning of man’s existence on the earth.
The most of Polish amber workshops were located in Gdansk and Kurpia. Amber was used to make different things like furniture, boxes, sculptures and mosaics. Amber was in fashion all over Europe. Famous amber workshops worked in Italy as early as II BC. The main location of Italian craftsmen was Aquilea from where amber products were delivered to Roman Emperor.
Amber was also valued for its magical and healing properties. You can find more about that in Curiosities.
